MARIO ANTÓN — CONTEMPORARY ARTIST IN MENORCA
Born in Santander, Spain, in 1993, Mario Antón is a Spanish contemporary artist based in Mahón, Menorca. He studied Fine Arts and Design in Madrid. His practice centres on painting and the transformation of antique religious triptychs and altarpieces, whose historical surfaces become the starting point for new images.
Antón works through a process he describes as reverse restoration. Rather than returning an object to an earlier state, he removes its original image, prepares the old wooden support and constructs a new iconography while preserving the physical memory and devotional authority of the object.
Drawing on medieval and Renaissance painting, his work introduces contemporary landscapes, machines, infrastructures and altered natural forms into formats once associated with worship.
His paintings examine the tension between humanity and nature, and the systems through which the modern world attempts to organise, exploit and control matter: energy, technology, industry, consumption and belief. By placing these subjects inside antique religious structures, Antón explores how contemporary forms of power inherit the visual language of faith and salvation.
Moving between attraction and unease, his work questions whether human mastery is real or merely an illusion staged against the sublime force of nature.
Menorca, where he has lived since 2016, is central to his practice—not simply as a landscape, but as a territory shaped by stone, water, archaeology, tourism, energy and changing systems of value. Alongside his studio practice, he develops and curates cultural projects through The Santa Clara Project and Marés.
