"Eden® is an invitation to reflect on the complex relationship between material needs and spiritual aspirations in the context of modern consumerism. Mario's work motivates us to reconsider whether the market's promises of well-being really lead to a fulfilled life or whether, on the contrary, excess and ambition detract from a deeper search for meaning and mystical connection.
Inspired by his family collection of antique religious triptychs, Mario Antón uses these iconic formats as blank canvases to express contemporary concerns, exploring current reality, the future of our planet, the power of nature and environmental issues. Through a creative process that involves analysing the iconology of the ancient altarpieces - which reflect the historical and political context of their creation -, removing the original paint and restoring the wood and then creating a new imaginary while preserving the original spirit of each object, he reinterprets the original image and message with a contemporary language, creating a fusion between the past and the present.
Mario Antón bases his work on the ideas of Mauricio Lazzarato in "Politics of the Event", where he argues that financial capital not only manufactures goods, but worlds full of signs and images that promise an earthly paradise through consumption, and on the philosophy of Plato, who in his dualism postulated the existence of two realities: the sensible world (the material) and the intelligible world (ideas), pointing out the importance of transcending the tangible to reach truth and wisdom.
Each of the pieces that make up this exhibition acts as a mirror that reflects the interaction between the material and the emotional aspects of life. It is more than a conversation between two works; it is an emotional and philosophical journey that challenges one to look beyond the superficial and seek a deep harmony between the inner and outer world, speed and patience. A call to introspection and empathy, to observe and to feel, to connect with spiritual roots and with nature, playing with the frenetic sound of a supermarket in a place where transactions are purely spiritual.
A space where art becomes a bridge between the tangible and the intangible, a place to find a refuge for the soul amidst the hustle and bustle of modern consumerism that reminds us that, in the unbridled pursuit of material goods, we often lose sight of the essence of what it means to be human. Where do we come from? Where are we? Where are we going? Where are we going? What do we want? What do we need?
These questions, linked to the reflection of his work, invite us to consider our personal and collective journey in the search for a balance between the material and the spiritual. Ultimately, Mario Antón's work reminds us that true happiness and fulfilment are not to be found in the accumulation of things, but in the deep connection with ourselves, with others and with the world around us.
Through an exercise to recover antique religious triptychs, Mario Antón (Santander, Spain 1993) reflects on the future of our planet, the force of nature and environmental issues.
The work of Mario Antón, has its origins in his family collection of triptychs, pieces that he uses as a blank canvas where he can express the current concerns of our contemporary world.
The triptychs have always been an emblematic format in the world of art, a piece which is not affected by the passage of time; these objects and what they represent, go together in perfect consonance with the historical context in which they are created.
They also have a certain political origin, reflecting the socio-cultural context of the period of their creation, equating the political salvation to the spiritual one.
Mario explores the different stories behind each triptych, and his work of process: from analysing the iconology of each of them to get inspiration, the manual work he does by removing the original painting and preparing the wood, to finally create a new imaginary and iconology maintaining the origi- nal spirit of each triptych, reinterpreting the image and the original message and its symbolism with a new language.
The works emanate from Mario’s constant interest in ancient art, especially medieval and Renaissance devotional painting.
All of his triptychs work with the restoration technique in reverse. Like the paintings that have inspired him, they are vivid, realistic and silent works that make us reflect on the past, present and future.
His works are designed in such a way that they serve to cultivate knowledge about how to be in the world, to develop a deep understanding of our pres- ence on this planet.
